How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

Professional dental cleaning at Bayview Dentistry Fort Lauderdale

"Every six months" is the answer most people know, and for many patients it is correct. But the ideal interval is personal: it depends on how fast you build tartar, the health of your gums, your habits and your medical history.

Why professional cleanings matter

Even with perfect brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar in areas your brush cannot reach, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Tartar can only be removed with professional instruments. Left in place, it feeds the bacteria that cause gingivitis, periodontitis, cavities and bad breath.

Signs you might need cleanings more often

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Visible tartar build-up along the gumline
  • History of gum disease or deep pockets
  • Smoking, diabetes, pregnancy or orthodontic appliances

For these cases, your dentist may recommend cleanings every 3 or 4 months for a period, until things stabilize.

What happens during a cleaning at Bayview Dentistry

  1. Assessment: initial exam and a conversation about your routine, habits and goals.
  2. Ultrasonic and manual instruments: careful plaque and tartar removal, including hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Polishing and finishing: smoother tooth surfaces that make new biofilm build-up harder.
  4. Fluoride and instructions: when indicated, topical fluoride and a personalized home-care guide.

Bonus: your cleaning visit doubles as a smart check-up. We look for early signs of cavities, gum problems and wear, when treatments are still simple and conservative.

Overdue for a cleaning?

If it has been more than six months, or if your gums are showing any of the signs above, it is a good time to book. See what our dental cleaning includes, or call us and leave with that truly clean-mouth feeling.
